What inspired your passion for sailing and boating, and how did it shape your career path?

Growing up on the water and spending summers on our family’s boat in France was more than just a pastime; it was a formative experience that sparked my passion for the sea. The allure of the open water and the freedom it offers are unmatched. This passion naturally led me to a career on the water, where I transitioned from a sailing enthusiast to a professional in the maritime industry.Can you share a memorable experience or adventure you’ve had while on the water?

 

One of my most memorable experiences was working as a flotilla skipper in Greece for Sailing Holidays. We encountered severe weather, with absolute beginners at the helm of several boats. Navigating through the storm and ensuring everyone’s safety was a challenging yet rewarding experience. It was a true test of leadership and sailing skills, and it reinforced my love for the challenges and rewards of the sea.

Liz Day Photo 9What do you enjoy most about helping clients buy or sell their yachts, and what makes you unique in your approach?

I find great satisfaction in helping clients find their dream yachts or transition smoothly when selling. My background as a captain and sailing instructor in the BVI provides me with in-depth knowledge of the region and the nuances of different vessels. This experience allows me to offer a personalized and informed approach, ensuring clients receive the best advice and service. Plus, I always throw in a good sea story or two!

How do you stay connected to the local boating community, and what insider knowledge do you bring to your clients?

I stay active in the local boating community by delivering boats for a sailing school and regularly sailing with my family. My hands-on experience and local knowledge are invaluable for clients looking for insider tips and the best spots in the Caribbean.

Liz Day Photo 3What hobbies or interests do you pursue when you’re not working, and how do they complement your professional life?

When I’m not working, I enjoy long-distance swimming, and I’m preparing for a 10km swim called “the bone crusher” from Tortola to Jost Van Dyke. These activities help me stay connected with the local community and keep me physically and mentally sharp, which is essential in my professional life.

What is your age and educational background?

I’m 37 years old and hold an RYA YachtMaster offshore 200 ton qualification, which has been instrumental in my career. My formal education might not be directly related to my profession, but real-world experience has been my best teacher.

What is your relationship status and do you have children?

I have a 3-year-old son who is already familiar with nautical terms and loves surfing. While I am separated from his father, a yacht technician, we are committed to raising our son cooperatively, and instilling a love for the sea.

What were your previous jobs before joining BVI Yacht Sales, and how do they contribute to your current role?

I spent five years in the Mediterranean working in high-performance dinghy sailing resorts and as a flotilla skipper. I also freelanced as a sailing instructor and bareboat captain,Liz Day Photo 1  predominantly in the BVI. These roles have equipped me with a deep understanding of various vessels and the needs of yacht owners and buyers.

What is your favorite boat and why?

I have a strong background with production boats like Beneteau, Jeanneau, Dufour, Lagoon, and FP. For cruising around the Caribbean, a Lagoon 450 is an excellent choice due to its popularity and versatility, despite some known issues. For a global voyage, I’d opt for a different design, perhaps something by Bruce Farr, known for well-balanced and thoughtfully designed boats.

 

What is your favorite place in the Caribbean, and why?

Josiah’s Bay is my favorite spot, not just for its great surf but because it’s where I live. It’s a beautiful and tranquil place, perfect for enjoying the Caribbean lifestyle.

You’ll likely find me on the beach with my son, building sandcastles or enjoying the waves.
