Description

If you've been searching for a true offshore sportfisher with pedigree, strength, and proven Caribbean capability, Matadora deserves your attention.

The Southern Cross 44 is an exceptionally rare yacht featuring one of legendary naval architect Tom Fexas' most innovative hull designs. Incorporating underwater exhausts, hull venting, and a narrowed running surface aft, this hull delivers an incredibly soft, dry ride while maintaining remarkable efficiency and stability offshore.

Constructed using a Kevlar/fiberglass sandwich laminate, the hull is exceptionally strong while remaining lighter than comparable production sportfish. Even after nearly four decades, the hull shows virtually no stress cracking—an impressive testament to the quality of construction.

Powered by twin Detroit Diesel 6V-92TA engines producing a combined 1,100 horsepower, Matadora cruises comfortably around 25 knots while carrying an impressive 650 gallons of fuel, making her ideally suited for island hopping, tournament fishing, or extended cruising throughout the Caribbean.

Inside, two comfortable staterooms, a well-equipped galley, air conditioning, and spacious salon provide comfortable accommodations after a successful day offshore.

Whether your passion is bluewater fishing, cruising between islands, or owning a truly unique classic sportfisher, Matadora represents a rare opportunity.

Owners Comments and Boat History

Matadora has benefited from long-term ownership and continuous improvement throughout much of her life.

The previous owners purchased the vessel in 2005 and maintained her for approximately 17 years. During their ownership, the twin Detroit Diesel 6V-92TA engines were rebuilt shortly after purchase and later retrofitted in 2020. They maintained extensive service records and documentation, reflecting a consistent commitment to the vessel's upkeep and mechanical reliability.

The current owners purchased Matadora in 2022 with plans to establish a charter fishing operation. Unfortunately, changing personal and business commitments left them with insufficient time to pursue the venture as intended. As a result, the boat has seen limited use during their ownership and is now being offered for sale so she can return to regular service.

Matadora presents an excellent opportunity for a knowledgeable buyer to acquire a rare Tom Fexas-designed sportfisher with a solid maintenance history, documented engine work, and the foundation to continue her legacy as a capable offshore fishing and cruising platform.

"When we bought Matadora in 2022, we had a vision of building a charter fishing business around her. From the first sea trial, it was obvious she was something special. The ride is incredibly solid and comfortable, even when the conditions aren't. You can tell she was designed by someone who truly understood offshore boats.

Unfortunately, life had other plans. Between work and family commitments, we simply haven't had the time to use her the way we intended. Rather than let her spend more time at the dock, we've decided it's time for someone else to enjoy everything she has to offer.

One thing that really impressed us was the engineering behind this boat. She's built differently than most sportfish of her era, and you can feel it underway. The previous owners clearly cared for her and kept excellent records, and we've always appreciated the work they put into maintaining and improving the boat.

We hope the next owner uses Matadora the way she was built to be used—running offshore, chasing fish, exploring new islands, and making memories on the water. She's a rare boat, and we know she'll take good care of the people aboard her for many years to come.
