Having been stuck in NZ for an extended period during covid, we knew we would be spending a large amount of time near friends and family we were separated from for that time. We wanted a large volume vessel that could comfortably accommodate us, these friends and family members, run school for our 2 children and have enough space for us all (including a teenager) to be able to disappear. We also really wanted a boat that sailed really well, could easily handle a decent sea and was fast enough to maintain 200nm/day speeds if we wanted to or it was necessary to achieve that. Tu Meke exceeded these expectations and has an impressive ability to easily cover ground and disguise speed and maintain a light helm. We've sailed her from Croatia all the way through the Med (although the typical med conditions sadly meant we had to motor a lot), undertaking the major refit in Spain in November, dropping the mast and redoing all the electronics ready for crossing the Atlantic. The investment to get her ready for this voyage was significant, but she really looked after us as a result and didn't suffer a single fault or breakage the entire way across. Tu Meke swallows everything we have in her vast areas of storage. We even had the luxury of choosing and stacking our provisions in more convenient locations rather than having to resort to the harder to reach areas for the Atlantic. It's been a pleasure to sail between the Caribbean islands, and it's been fun to monitor the other boats crossing at the same time on AIS as we real them in and eventually pass them. Waterline is king! I was bought up in NZ and the hard racing scene so the thought of an in mast furler was like a bit of blasphemy, but with the new sails and the ease at which one can reef in nearly all wind angles I wouldn't cruise with a different set up, it's just so easy and manageable.
She's fast, incredibly roomy, can turn within her waterline and has a comfortable motion. It's a perfect set up for a family.
ADDITIONAL INFO
VAT paid when it was in Europe. It has spent it's entire life in Croatia and was well cared for before we bought it but it does have some blemishes, cuts on the wood in the kitchen where knives have gone, and some small chips in the gelcoat (most of which we have repaired). We've worked hard to make her as presentable as possible while keeping up all the necessary maintenance needed to ensure safe passage. Replacing rigging and sails were a must and were 10k euro each. Thru hulls and sea cocks have been replaced, electrics fully upgraded and mechanicals worked over. the engine is near 5,000 hours so the valve adjustment has been done, the turbo been fully rebuilt, the clutch and damper plates replaced, engine mounts replaced, cutlass bearings replaced, as with the main shaft seal. 5 days were spent buffing the hull and applying ceramic coating. The dodger was in bad shape but also a terrible design in that one couldn't see over it or through it from the helm, so that was redesigned and replaced now affording great visibility. Keeping the boat cool with airflow even when raining was very important to us, so the coachroof sunshade is designed so no rain can enter the top hatches. The saloon table was replaced with a permanently larger table and extra seating installed along the kitchen so more people can comfortably sit around the table and it folds down when not in use so you can still walk by with no issues. The boat is fully insured with Velos insurance and is $7k/year. Antifoul is the non toxic Seajet 038 as used by Chris Doyle and is the most effective we have used.
